PopCard Greetings 2.3.7 Now Available

Posted on Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Thanks to an ongoing trickle of requests and the discovery that someone was selling it elsewhere on the net, I've decided to resurrect an old script of mine called PopCard Greetings and make it freely available to the world.

PopCard is a simple script that allows you to set up an e-cards service on your website similar to the one built into Pixaria Gallery. The original idea was inspired by iCards which was a feature of Apple's iTools services which later became .Mac and is now MobileMe.

The concept is simple, the user is sent the card as a JPEG attachment in an e-mail rather than having to go to the website to download it which makes for a considerably more attractive and personal message for the recipient.

As I've only just dusted off PopCard, it's a little out of date as the code hasn't been seriously edited since 2005. As a result, you use it entirely at your own risk and I make no claims about the security or stability of it.

I hope to release updates in the near future which will make it a smaller package, remove the need to include Smarty with it and improve the security of the various scripts in the package.

Pixaria Gallery Version 2.3.2

Posted on Monday, June 23, 2008

I've just released Pixaria Gallery version 2.3.2 which is a highly recommended upgrade for all users of version 2.3.

There are no major new features in this version but the update does benefit from much expanded support for IPTC importing with additional fields now available including city, country and creator information. I've also made a number of other minor enhancements such as speed optimisations and added a new appearance setting for defining a fixed thumbnail size for the front end which can help improve page load times.

Full details of all the changes can be found in the release notes which as usual, everyone is advised to consult before upgrading..!

This update includes a fix for some issues with the Java uploader applet that will require you to replace the applet settings files as listed in the file change log as there was an error in them that could prevent the original size image from being uploaded.

To get the upgrade which is free to all current registered users, please e-mail upgrade@pixaria.com.

I'm hoping to be able to get version 2.3.2 out tomorrow as well so be sure to watch this space for more details.

Patch to fix upgrade issue with version 2.3.0

Posted on Thursday, June 12, 2008

An incorrect table name in the upgrade script for version 2.3.0 means that version 2.3.1 is now here..! This is such a small update, that I thought it would be simpler to post the three changed files here rather than give out the entire package for the update.

You should only add these changed files to your site if you're already using version 2.3.0. Using these changed files with earlier versions of Pixaria will almost certainly cause your site to stop functioning correctly..!

To apply the patch, upload the files as if it were part of a normal update, run the admin.upgrade.php script and then flush the Smarty cache.

You can download the files here.

Pixaria 2.3 Coming This Week

Posted on Saturday, June 7, 2008

I'm pleased to report that Pixaria Gallery version 2.3 is almost ready for release and that I'll be offering it from Monday June 9th.

The reason for the delay in getting this one out is primarily due to the many minor changes and improvements included in the update, all of which have meant a lot more testing than normal as so many small things have changed.

In particular, my main focus for this release has been to further improve on the speed and performance of the software particularly in searching and browsing results. In this effort, I'm indebted to three Pixaria users who kindly gave me access to their servers in order to carry out in situ testing of the performance tweaks I've been making.

After this update is released, my attention will be turning to version 2.5 and looking further still, the important process of deciding what features to target for version 3.0 which I'm hoping to release early in 2009. Stay tuned for more on this as I'm planning to publish an (experimental) roadmap for Pixaria for the next 12 months on which feedback is more than welcome..!

Documentation updates now available in an RSS feed

Posted on Sunday, June 1, 2008

After making some much needed updates to the Pixaria documentation yesterday, it occurred to me that a great way of letting people know about updates to the documentation would be to provide an RSS feed.

Since the wiki script I'm using already stores the edit dates for topics, this was really easy to do so I'm happy to provide a link to the new RSS feed which you can subscribe to using your favourite web browser (Firefox, Safari, IE7) or news feed reader.

You can subscribe to the new feed here.
