Photographer Profile: Justin Roselt

Starting out

Based in Australia, Justin Roselt is a digital photographer who has been using Pixaria to sell photos both from commissions and speculative shoots. Justin first got into photography after buying a Canon A60. Unable to leave the house without it, people began to comment on how good the photos were and after playing with a friend's Canon DSLR, Justin was hooked. "I had to have one!" He recalls. "People then wanted my photos (particularly enlargements) so I decided to take it more seriously and begin selling them on do-not-bend.com.

After previously leaning more towards landscape, cityscape and construction imagery, Justin has lately seen an increased demand for portrait photography including weddings which is driving his business in new directions.

Pointing to his first wedding shoot, Justin recalls that it proved to be a springboard to other work from a range of sources. "The photos came out fantastically and it has generated more work via word of mouth and the print material/media that I supplied to clients after the job - plus there have even been a few publications along the way."

Professional workflow

In preparing for a shoot, Justin takes time to ensure he has all the facts he needs before taking any photos. Prep work for recent shoots in and around city and park locations involves scouting out the location, checking for and idea of the optimum aspect, time of day and lighting conditions to shoot. Online research can also come in useful in the planning stages. Looking at popular photo sharing websites like Flickr can provide a useful insight into what approaches and techniques other photographers might have used in similar locations.

In Justin's workflow, Pixaria Gallery is the final destination for all the commercially available photos that he shoots and is the main means by which his images are sold. Commenting on what he likes most about Pixaria Gallery, Justin said. "Its ability to protect images, the layout and overall theming possibilities. The admin backend is easy to use and manage photos from and its framework allows for customisation. It's also easy to navigate as a visitor/user to the site and is searchable."

Growing the business

With his current projects, Justin certainly isn't letting the grass grow under his feet and his plans for the future are ambitious. Seeking to expand his business through collaboration with two other associates with the same goals and business ideas Justin is in a great position both to continue to explore his interest in the world of digital media and make it a viable source of income. We wish him all the best.
